Extreme Planting – Les Hommes qui plantaient des arbres en Colombie-Britannique

This exhibit presents a group of professional tree-planters in coastal BC. These people work in extremely challenging terrain and climate conditions, reforesting after clear-cuts. Beyond economical, political and ecological considerations and, the S word (sustainability, of course), these people perform a very difficult job with a great deal of optimism. Indeed, none of them will see “their” trees in the magnificent prime they will display some hundred years from now. I have tried to picture the job from the ground, as close as possible to the planters because it is first and foremost an everyday human adventure…
[the subtitle is of course a reference to Jean Giono’s book: the man who planted trees.]

The pictures shown here are digital pictures of the original prints for the show, on 11×14″ fibre based paper, printed by the photographer.

Cette exposition présente un groupe de (re-)planteurs professionnels de la cote ouest du Canada. Ces hommes et femmes officient dans des terrains quasi-impraticables et des conditions climatiques difficiles afin de reboiser après les coupes à blanc opérées par les compagnies forestières. Au-delà des implications économiques, politiques, écologiques et du fameux mot en S (“sustainability” en effet), ce sont surtout des hommes et des femmes qui font un travail ardu et éminemment optimiste : ils ne verront jamais “leurs” arbres en toute splendeur, quelques cent années plus tard. J’ai cherché à montrer leur métier de l’intérieur, au plus près des planteurs, car c’est avant tout une aventure humaine au quotidien…
[le titre est bien évidemment une référence au livre de Jean Giono : l’homme qui plantait des arbres.]
