Projet collaboratif Arnaud De Grave & Arnaud Thurel

Trips are astonishing because the displacements they generate can induce a parallel inner-displacement.

Arnaud De Grave and Arnaud Thurel present here this joint project around a road-trip by Arnaud De Grave in Spain and Portugal. The two photographers take up the idea of an epistolary correspondence but here shown within a photographic framework. On the first day of his journey, Arnaud De Grave shot a triptych and sent a message to Arnaud Thurel to inform him of his state of mind at the time, a clue to a photography to be discovered later, after development. By using the message received by his friend, Arnaud Thurel in turn produces his own triptych. He is not travelling, so he responds in a state of “motionless travel”. He finds a resonance to the words of Arnaud De Grave. His gaze is modified by the words received. The next day the process is reversed. The system put in place makes it possible to question the notion of alterity related to the trip. Can one be feeling the elsewhere of another while staying home? What remains of the words sent from one to the other inside the final images?

The exhibition is based on a dozen double-triptychs answering each other, as well as the words sent during the road trip. Maps are also available to contextualise geography and to highlight the photographic back and forth. One also finds an almost assumed reference to Michel Butor and the nouveau roman in the title as well as in the approach.
