The real Shanghai skyline is at street level. Unfortunately, the most interesting neighborhoods are being liquidated. The city thrived in transformation, but the latest changes will erase everything that was uniquely Shanghai. I’m documenting the city’s ‘residue’ using archaic tools and film media that is also dying gracefully.

I am a book designer and illustrator, I grew up in Siberia. After years of drifting in East Asia I became fascinated by urban form and photography. One day, my family sent me some Soviet cameras and a box of expired DDR film, and this accelerated a transition from digital to analog. Shanghai is a special city, and I feel privileged to explore and document its lesser known corners. These days, I spend my time wandering the streets, hunting down old film stock and swapping eccentric cameras with friends in Shanghai.
